Disney Lorcana is a trading card game, and the Festival of the Arts runs three parallel quests around it, each rewarding a different exclusive card. Pick up the free quest book near the entrance to World Showcase. It is free but limited to available supply, so come early in the day if this is a reason for your visit.

Do you need to know how to play Lorcana?

No, and it is the first thing worth knowing. All three quests are about collecting and trading cards, not playing the game — there is no point at which anyone asks you to build a deck or understand the rules. Complete newcomers finish all three in an afternoon, and the regulars are generally happy to explain the game while trading.

How does the Lorcana Collection Quest work?

Your quest book names four specific cards, and there are 25 different quest books in circulation, so the person beside you is almost certainly hunting different cards, which is precisely what makes trading work. You get a starter pack when you collect the book, then trade with other guests until you have all four.

What are the Lorcana trading rules?

Three rules govern trading at the festival, and cast members state them at the lounge.

• Like for like — Trade by the rarity symbol at the bottom of the card, not by character
• No duplicates — You cannot trade for a card you already hold
• Two per person — A maximum of two cards may be traded with any one guest

The like-for-like rule is the one newcomers miss. Every card carries a rarity symbol at the bottom, and trading matches those symbols, not characters, so a card you do not need is still worth exactly what its symbol says, and can be traded even when neither party needs the other's character.

Where is the Illumineer's Lounge?

The Illumineer's Lounge occupies the former Restaurant Marrakesh at the back of the Morocco pavilion, decorated with Lorcana card art, and it is open 11am to 9pm. It is where trading concentrates and where quests are redeemed. Figment's Inspiration Station at the Odyssey is the second redemption point, and is usually the quieter of the two.

What is in the Illumineer's Trove?

The Archazia's Island Illumineer's Trove costs $49.99 and is the only paid part of the quest. It contains a full-art storage box, seven card dividers, eight booster packs of twelve randomised cards each, six damage counter dice and a lore counter. Booster packs are also sold separately at $5.99.

There is no annual passholder discount on the trove.

Is the Lorcana quest worth doing?

The two free quests are among the best things at the Festival of the Arts, and for an unexpected reason: this is the most social activity Disney runs at EPCOT. Trading requires talking to strangers, and the queue for a card display turns into a conversation.

Newcomers get taught the game by people who play it, and cards get given away outright by guests holding spares.

Who should skip the Lorcana quest?

Anyone who wants a quiet, self-contained activity — the Collection Quest cannot be completed alone, because it depends entirely on trading with other guests. Anyone unwilling to approach strangers will finish the scavenger hunt and stall on the collection. And the $49.99 trove is worth it only if you actually intend to play, since the Stitch card is otherwise a fifty-dollar souvenir.
