Has a Disney cruise ship had a norovirus outbreak?

Not on the CDC's current lists. The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program posts an outbreak when 3% or more of passengers or crew report stomach illness on a voyage that calls at both U.S. and foreign ports. Its 2026 list, reviewed in July, has nine outbreaks: four on one Lindblad expedition ship, three on Princess, one each on Oceania and Regent.

Its lists for 2023, 2024 and 2025 contain no Disney ship either.

The last Disney outbreak we found was in 2016. On a Disney Wonder cruise from April to May 2016, 131 of 2,680 passengers fell ill, and the CDC confirmed norovirus on 12 May, according to the Disney Cruise Line Blog's reports at the time. The blog quoted CDC records calling it the first on a Disney ship since the Disney Magic in 2002.

The CDC no longer publishes its 2017 to 2022 lists on its site, and we could not check them. We are not saying there were none.

What are the CDC inspection scores for each Disney ship?

The CDC inspects ships sailing from U.S. ports and scores them out of 100; 85 or lower is not satisfactory. The latest score for each Disney ship, from the CDC's Green Sheet on 15 September 2026:

The Disney Adventure is not on the list. It sails only from Singapore, outside the CDC programme, so it has no CDC score.

How do Disney's scores compare with other cruise lines?

Best of the major lines. We grouped the ships on the CDC's Green Sheet by line and averaged each line's latest scores (smaller lines and expedition ships are left out of the table but counted in the overall average):

Across all 207 ships the average is 96.6, and two fall below the pass mark.

Read it for what it is. A score is one unannounced sanitation inspection, EverythingMouse notes, not an illness rate, and a line with more ships has more chances of a bad day. What it does show is that Disney's whole fleet passes comfortably at once, which none of the larger lines matches.

What does Disney do to stop illness spreading?

Disney's own list: a health questionnaire for every guest and crew member before boarding, crew training in preventing illness, extra cleaning of handrails, doorknobs, lift buttons and children's areas, staterooms cleaned twice a day, and a Health Center with doctors and nurses on every ship.

A microbiologist who sailed the Disney Fantasy, writing in June 2026, noticed details Disney does not list: buffet plates stored upside down, some buffets served by crew rather than self-service, and hand-washing sinks in the children's areas that do the scrubbing for small hands.

How do you avoid norovirus on a cruise?

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after the toilet and before eating. Disney asks this, and the CDC gives the reason: hand sanitiser does not work well against norovirus. Supervise children's hand-washing too.
