What should you do before your first Disney cruise?

Most of it happens on a fixed timetable, set by Disney and counted back from your sail date.

What documents do you need for a Disney cruise?

A valid government-issued photo ID for everyone, at minimum, and a passport on some itineraries. Disney's own FAQ adds four rules that catch people:

• Flying home needs a passport. Anyone entering or re-entering the United States by air must have one, including US citizens.
• Check the expiry date. Many countries want a passport valid for up to six months after the cruise ends.
• Bring the Port Arrival Form. The guest who booked must have a copy of the Online Check-In Port Arrival Form.
• Children without a parent need an authorisation form signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Disney recommends a passport even where none is required, because it is what lets you fly home from a foreign port if an emergency cuts the cruise short.

What happens on embarkation day?

Arrive at your Port Arrival Time, not before. Disney says guests who come early are asked to wait outside the terminal, where seating and shelter may be limited. Inside, your documents are checked, and you are then called to board by boarding group, which can run later than your arrival time.

If you never got a Port Arrival Time, Disney says to arrive 60 to 90 minutes before the all-aboard time. Anyone arriving after the Guest Onboard Time on the confirmation may be refused boarding.

What should you pack for a first Disney cruise?

Less than you think in the bathroom, and more in your hand luggage. Every stateroom has a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and soap. Disney asks you to carry documents, your payment card, prescription medicines in their original containers and valuables with you, not in checked bags.

Alcohol has a strict allowance. Each guest 21 or older may carry on one unopened bottle of wine or sparkling wine of up to 750 ml, or six beers of up to 12 ounces, at the start of the cruise, in hand luggage only. Opening that wine in a dining room costs $20 corkage. Anything bought in port is held until the last day.

Pirate Night costumes are welcome, with limits: no toy weapons, and a mask that covers the face only while standing still for a character photo. Pack a jacket for northern itineraries, and comfortable shoes for port days.

How do you pay for things on a Disney cruise?

With your stateroom card. Disney charges everything on board, from drinks to photos to gratuities, to your stateroom account in US dollars, and the card you put on file during online check-in settles it automatically. Disney charges the card each time the balance reaches a limit set by cruise length:

• 2 to 5 nights — $300
• 6 to 9 nights — $500
• 10 nights or more — $700

Disney suggests a credit card rather than a debit card, to avoid temporary holds, and does not accept buy-now-pay-later cards. In the Bahamas and the Caribbean, it says US dollars and major cards are accepted almost everywhere ashore.

What catches first-time Disney cruisers out?

The costs that are not in the fare. Disney recommends $16 per guest per night in gratuities, adds 18% to bar, spa and adult-dining bills, and sells no unlimited drinks package. Our cruise cost guide totals it.

Missing the windows. Palo, Port Adventures and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique open at 75 days for a first cruise and go early; free character experiences open at 30 days.

The late dinner seating. It is assigned by default and read as "early was full". Ask for 5:45 PM as soon as you book.
