Disney cruise embarkation day, step by step: parking, Port Arrival Time, lunch, your stateroom and the safety drill

What does a Disney cruise embarkation day look like, hour by hour?

Most first days follow the same shape. Times vary by sailing, and the Navigator app has yours once you are on board.

• Early morning — Disney's health questionnaire arrives by email and in the app; fill it in before the port
• About 11 a.m. — The terminal opens; the earliest Port Arrival Times start around 11 to 11:30 a.m.
• 20 to 30 minutes before your time — Arrive, drop your bags with a porter, park
• Your Port Arrival Time — Enter the terminal: security, documents, a boarding group
• From about 30 minutes after the first times — Boarding groups are called
• Late morning to early afternoon — Lunch: the buffet or a main dining room
• Around 1:30 p.m. — Staterooms open
• Afternoon into evening — Checked bags reach your door
• Mid-afternoon — The safety drill, at 3:30 p.m. on one recent Fantasy sailing and usually 4:00 or 4:30 p.m.

The terminal and boarding times are from The Mouse for Less and Disney Cruise Planning; the questionnaire and stateroom times from planDisney; the drill times from WDW News Today and TouringPlans. On our Disney Treasure sailing in August 2026 the questionnaire arrived at about four in the morning, and the stateroom corridors opened at 1:30 p.m.

When should you arrive for a Disney cruise?

About 20 to 30 minutes before your Port Arrival Time. A planDisney panelist, answering in May 2025, explained that the time is when you are scheduled to enter the terminal, not when you board, and that arriving much earlier can leave you waiting outside until your window opens.

You choose the time during online check-in, and the earliest slots go first, in order of Castaway Club tier. Our online check-in guide has the opening days by tier. In our view an early time matters most on a short cruise, where the first afternoon is a real share of the trip.

Check which terminal. Disney uses two at Port Canaveral, 8 and 10. They sit side by side but do not share parking, and the Wish usually uses 10.⁹ Our Treasure sailing left from 8, Disney's own themed terminal; our Wish sailing in July left from 10. Terminal 10 is being rebuilt, a $95 million project due to finish in November 2027.

At Terminal 8 you stop at the curb to hand over bags, then drive to the garage. At Port Everglades' Terminal 4 the luggage drop is on the first floor of the garage, the planDisney panelist said.

How much is parking, and is Disney's bus cheaper?

For most families, parking is cheaper than Disney's transfers by a wide margin.

• Port Canaveral parking — $20 a day plus tax, counting the day you arrive and the day you leave; paid on entry
• Port Everglades parking — $20 daily maximum; Terminal 4 is served by the Heron Garage
• Disney transfer to Port Canaveral — $45 a person each way, from Orlando airport or a Walt Disney World hotel
• Disney transfer to Port Everglades — $29 a person each way from the airport; $21 from the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina

The parking rates are the two ports' own; the transfer prices are from planDisney panelists in May 2024 and August 2025, with Port Canaveral's unchanged at $45 between them.

The arithmetic. On a four-night cruise from Port Canaveral, the car is parked for five days: $100 plus tax. Disney's transfers for a family of four, both ways, come to $360. The transfers win when you are flying in and would otherwise rent a car only for the drive.

When we parked for a seven-night Treasure cruise, the lot charged for eight days on entry, as the port's rule implies: $160 plus tax. The Terminal 8 garage has covered spaces and lifts, and the walk to the terminal is short.

What happens to your luggage on embarkation day?

You hand it over at the port and do not see it again until the afternoon or evening. Tag each bag with Disney's luggage tags before you arrive; porters take them at the curb or garage. planDisney says bags can arrive a few hours after staterooms open, and Disney Cruise Planning warns your room may not be ready until dinner time.

Pack a day bag. Documents, medication, chargers, sunscreen and swimwear should travel with you, because the pools open long before your suitcase arrives.

Lost your luggage tags? The porters have spares. Ours never arrived for the Treasure, and the porter at the curb filled in blank ones with our stateroom number. He asked two things: did we have our passports with us, and was there alcohol in the bags?

Neither belongs in checked luggage. Disney lets guests 21 and over carry on one bottle of wine or champagne, or six beers, at the start of the cruise.

If you take Disney's transfer from a Walt Disney World hotel, the bags travel separately. On one reported sailing they were collected from the room at 8:30 a.m.⁴ and went to the port in luggage vans, ahead of the family's bus.

Where do you eat lunch on Disney cruise embarkation day?

Either at the buffet or at a sit-down lunch in one of the main dining rooms. The buffet is Cabanas on the Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy and Marceline Market on the Wish-class ships. planDisney says the Navigator app shows which main dining room is open for lunch after you board.

Disney Cruise Planning's author prefers the sit-down lunch as the calmer start, and the planDisney panelist's family follows lunch with soft-serve by the pool. We ate at Marceline Market on the Treasure.

Eat before the safety drill. On our Wish sailing the food stations closed shortly before it began. All activities stop while the drill runs.³

What should you do on the first afternoon before the ship sails?

Explore while it is quiet. planDisney points to open houses in the youth clubs, where children can meet the counsellors, and to spa tours with raffles, all listed in the app.

It is also the afternoon to fix anything you could not book in advance. The Mouse for Less lists adult dining at Palo, Remy or Enchanté, spa treatments, port adventures, the nursery and character meetings among the things worth arranging on day one.

Two things we learned on the Treasure. A sign on our veranda door said it would stay shut until late afternoon while the ship refuelled, so check yours before planning a balcony drink. And dining requests are worth making on day one: we asked for a table to ourselves, and it was already arranged.

How does the Disney cruise safety drill work?

Everyone takes part, in person, before the ship leaves. Disney's own wording, as quoted by WDW News Today, is that all guests must join the pre-departure assembly drill to comply with U.S. Coast Guard and international rules, and that everyone is told when it begins. In-person drills returned in 2022 after the pandemic.³

Your assembly station letter is on your Key to the World card, your life vests and the map on your stateroom door, and the app shows it on a map. You do not bring a life vest. You check in with a crew member, watch a short demonstration and leave.

It usually takes about 20 minutes.

One planning site disagrees on timing. Disney Cruise Planning suggests getting the drill "out of the way" early. Disney's wording and the published accounts all describe one set time, announced across the ship. Plan on the set time.
