The Disney Skyliner: how it works and how to hop the whole line

How does the Disney Skyliner work?

The Disney Skyliner is a gondola network of three lines, all meeting at a hub station at Caribbean Beach Resort. It connects four resorts to two parks — EPCOT's International Gateway entrance and Disney's Hollywood Studios — and it is free to ride with no ticket or reservation.

Can you board the Skyliner at the BoardWalk?

No, and this catches people out constantly. There is a Skyliner structure near Disney's BoardWalk Inn, but it is a turn station — the cable changes direction there and the gondolas do not stop. It exists for engineering reasons, not passenger ones.

BoardWalk guests walk to EPCOT's International Gateway and board there.

What are the Skyliner's hours?

Disney's rule is that the Skyliner starts an hour before Early Theme Park Entry begins at EPCOT or Hollywood Studios, and closes 90 minutes after those parks close. So the first gondola moves with the parks' hours rather than a fixed clock time, and on a day with Early Entry it starts earlier than the day before.

It is not a 24-hour system and does not run overnight, which matters if you have an early flight.

Does the Skyliner run in the rain?

In light rain, yes. It stops for lightning and for high wind, and buses are brought in to replace it while it is paused.

Nobody publishes the thresholds, and this page used to imply we knew them. It said "lightning within roughly six miles" and "sustained winds above about 35 mph", both cited to a source that contains neither figure — it says only that the Skyliner closes "if lightning is within a certain mile radius" and during "lightning and/or windy conditions".

Disney's own Skyliner pages do not mention wind, lightning or weather at all. Two precise-sounding numbers with nothing behind them are worse than the honest answer, which is that it pauses for lightning and wind and Disney does not say at what point.

In a central Florida summer, afternoon thunderstorms make these pauses a near-daily possibility rather than a rare event, so build a bus-shaped contingency into any Skyliner-dependent plan between June and September.

When does the Skyliner close completely?

Two situations, and the second is the one that ruins evenings. On EPCOT Extended Evening Hours nights, only the limited EPCOT–Riviera shuttle runs — the Caribbean Beach hub, the Hollywood Studios line and the Pop / Art of Animation line all close entirely, so guests at those three resorts are on buses.

The Skyliner also closes for a short annual refurbishment each January, with buses in its place. In 2026 that ran 25 to 31 January, and Disney has set 24 to 30 January 2027 for the next one.

Is there really a Skyliner heat closure?

No, and the phrase circulates enough to be worth correcting. There is no scheduled summer shutdown for heat. What people encounter in summer are the weather pauses above, triggered by lightning and wind, not temperature, plus the separate scheduled refurbishment which falls in January.

The gondolas are not air-conditioned, which is the real summer complaint, but they are ventilated and the journeys are short.

How do you hop the whole Skyliner in a day?

Start at the Riviera and work outward from the hub, which keeps every leg short. The full loop is comfortably a half-day with stops and needs no park ticket at any point.

• Caribbean Beach — The hub — Sebastian's Bistro and the Centertown Market food hall
• Art of Animation — The Big Blue Pool and the Cars, Lion King and Nemo courtyards
• Pop Century — The decade courtyards, and the walk between the two resorts over the bridge

Pop Century and Art of Animation share a station and are joined by a bridge, so they count as one stop, not two.

Who should not rely on the Skyliner?

Anyone on a tight schedule in summer, and anyone staying at Pop Century, Art of Animation or Caribbean Beach on an EPCOT Extended Evening Hours night — the system that sold you the resort will not be running when you want to come back. Anyone uncomfortable with heights should also note that the cabins are enclosed, suspended and do not stop moving to load.
