What happened to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at Disney World? The sudden closure, the lagoon, and what is left

The short answer

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was Magic Kingdom's submarine ride from 14 October 1971 to 5 September 1994. Disney closed it for a refurbishment that never came, made that permanent in 1996, filled the lagoon in 2004, and built New Fantasyland on the site. A sub still sits in Castaway Cay's snorkelling lagoon.

What was the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride?

A submarine voyage in Fantasyland, based on Disney's 1954 film, which opened on 14 October 1971, two weeks after Magic Kingdom itself.1 Riders went down a narrow stair to fold-down stools, each facing a porthole, while Captain Nemo narrated.

The subs passed coral, divers and turtles, went through a waterfall into a show building, and on to shipwrecks, the polar ice cap, Atlantis, a sea serpent and mermaids, ending with a giant squid attack. Bubble effects outside the glass sold the illusion of depth.

Why did 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea close?

Money and capacity, mostly. One planning site calls it a low-capacity ride that was expensive to run and due for a refurbishment.1 The Disney historian Jim Korkis adds water leaking into the utilidors beneath, corroding mechanical parts and the accessibility updates the Americans with Disabilities Act required. The reasons given are a failing lagoon seal and falling popularity as newer rides opened.3

None of the three blames one cause, and Disney never published one. What they agree on is the arithmetic: a large, wet, hard-to-maintain ride carrying relatively few people an hour.

How did Disney World let 20,000 Leagues rot away?

Slowly, and in public view. The ride closed on 5 September 1994 without warning, billed as temporary maintenance, and Korkis records a promised reopening in summer 1996. Instead, in April 1996, Disney made the closure permanent.

The lagoon stayed full for another eight years, with a corner rethemed as Ariel's Grotto, a King Triton fountain in the water. The subs sat backstage. In 2004 the lagoon was drained and filled, about 70,000 cubic yards of earth by Korkis's account, and most of the hulls were stripped and buried in a landfill.

What is on the site of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea now?

New Fantasyland. Pooh's Playful Spot, a toddler play area, opened on the filled lagoon on 1 September 2005, TouringPlans says; WDW Magazine dates it to 2004, the year the lagoon was filled. It and Ariel's Grotto closed in 2010 for New Fantasyland's construction.

Today the site holds Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid, open since 2012, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, open since 2014.

Where can you still see 20,000 Leagues at Disney World?

In tributes, if you know where to look. TouringPlans lists them:

  • Under the Sea queue, Fantasyland — A Nautilus hidden in the rockwork; the queue lagoon holds water bottled from the old lagoon and poured in in 2012
  • Prince Eric's Village Market area — A sign for "H. Goff", after Harper Goff, who designed the film's Nautilus; a giant-squid weather vane
  • Pooh's house, Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh — A small Nautilus above the door, carried over from Pooh's Playful Spot
  • Trader Sam's Grog Grotto, Polynesian — A Nautilus drink and souvenir glass

The water had waited 18 years in bottles, TouringPlans notes.

Is there really a 20,000 Leagues submarine at Castaway Cay?

Yes. Three subs were saved from the landfill, TouringPlans and Korkis agree: two went to Disney's Bahamian island, Castaway Cay, to sit on the bottom of the snorkelling lagoon, and one was later removed after hurricane damage. The third was displayed on the Studio Backlot Tour at Hollywood Studios until that closed, and its whereabouts are unclear.

The published accounts point to cost against capacity: a low-capacity ride that was expensive to maintain, needed a refurbishment, leaked water into the tunnels below, and would have needed accessibility work. Disney never gave a single public reason, and the three accounts we read weight the causes differently.
Where is the 20,000 Leagues submarine now?
One sits on the bottom of the snorkelling lagoon at Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line's island, still there in March 2026. A second was sent there but removed after hurricane damage, and a third, once on Hollywood Studios' backlot tour, is in storage or unaccounted for.
