Is Savi's Workshop worth it? The $274.99 lightsaber, judged on Disney's own fine print

What Savi's Workshop costs, and what the price covers

$274.99 per lightsaber, plus tax, at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Read off Disney's own page on 10 September 2026, where the experience is filed under shops rather than tours — which is the first honest signal about what it is.

The price covers one hilt that you assemble, a 31-inch blade fitted by a cast member, a kyber crystal in the colour you pick, a cloisonné pin marking your chosen theme, and a carrying case. Park admission is not included and never is.

The parts you reject do not come home with you. Disney's page is explicit: the box holds one hilt, four sleeves of which you pick two, two emitters of which you pick one, two pommel caps of which you pick one, and two sets of activation plates and switches of which you pick one set.

"Upon hilt completion, the unused parts will be collected by the Gatherers and returned to Savi's inventory." You are choosing from a kit, not keeping one.

The fine print is what actually decides this

Most write-ups of Savi's Workshop describe the ceremony. The terms are what people get caught by, and Disney publishes all of them in one block that few read before booking.

• Discounts — Not eligible for Annual Passholder or other discounts
• Cancellation — Full price charged for a cancellation inside 24 hours, or a no-show
• Who may build — One lightsaber per builder per experience
• Who may come in — The builder and one guest; the accompanying guest may not build
• Party age — At least one person in the party must be 14 or older
• Age guidance — Recommended for ages 5 and older
• Check-in — No earlier than 15 minutes before; every person present; late arrivals may not be accommodated
• At check-in — Reservation confirmation, photo ID and the credit card used to book
• Transfers — Reservations are nontransferable and may not be sold or bartered
• The room — An enclosed space with low lighting levels

Two Star Wars fans is $549.98, or one of them standing against the wall. This is the constraint that changes trips, and it is stated in a single line most people meet after they have already decided. The accompanying guest is a spectator by rule, not by capacity.

The nonrefundable term deserves the same weight. Disney takes the money at booking, 60 days before a trip that has not happened yet, and keeps it if a child is ill that morning.

Disney World and Disneyland sell the same experience on different terms

Both resorts run Savi's Workshop. They do not run it the same way, and the differences are not trivial — they cover price, when you pay, how many people can come in, and who Disney thinks it is for. Both columns were read from the two resorts' own pages on 10 September 2026.

$25 and one companion. The same build, the same parts kit, the same script, priced 10% higher in Florida and admitting one fewer person to watch it.

The two age lines cannot both be describing the same product. Florida says five and up with no ceiling. California says three to nine, which has a ceiling below the age of most of the adults who book it. We are not going to reconcile these for Disney.

Both are quoted here because both are what Disney publishes, and anyone citing one as "the age rule for Savi's Workshop" is citing one resort.

Disneyland's free version, with the caveat that matters. Disneyland currently runs the Youngling Saber Building Expo – A Loth-Cat Crew Experience: complimentary, walk-up, standby queue, daily from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It is interactive only and no lightsaber is included, though one may be bought at the end.

Disney's page introduces it with the words "For a limited time", so treat it as a thing that is running now and not as a feature of Savi's Workshop. Florida has no equivalent.

How long does Savi's Workshop take?

Budget the better part of an hour of your park day and you will not be caught out. The published accounts disagree about the rest, and the disagreement is worth seeing rather than averaging away.

• AllEars — About 20 minutes inside; closer to 30 to 45 with check-in and choosing a hilt style
• Ziggy Knows Disney — Roughly 30 to 45 minutes for the whole thing, in a group of about 14
• Disney Tourist Blog — Around 25 minutes for the experience

Disney itself publishes no duration at all, which is consistent with filing it as a shop. The reports agree on the shape even where the numbers differ: the build is about twenty minutes, and the half-hour-plus figures are counting the queue, the theme selection and the blade fitting at the end.

Group size is reported consistently at about fourteen builders per session. That is the number that explains the two complaints people make most often — that reservations are hard to get, and that the ceremony is a group ceremony. Fourteen people raising fourteen blades is the designed moment, and it is also why capacity runs out sixty days ahead.

When can you book Savi's Workshop?

Sixty days ahead, at 6:00 AM Eastern. Savi's Workshop is sold as part of Disney's Enchanting Extras Collection, and it books on exactly the rule our dining pages describe.

• Staying at a Disney resort hotel: book from 60 days before your arrival date for your whole stay, up to a 10-night stay, in one sitting.
• Everyone else: book from 60 days before each individual date.
• Windows open at approximately 6:00 AM daily.

That length-of-stay advantage is worth real money here, because it is the difference between one booking attempt and ten. A family arriving on day one can book a day-six lightsaber at the same 6:00 AM as everyone booking day one.

If the window has passed, Disney states that a limited number of same-day reservations may be released up to two hours in advance, and that walk-ins may be accommodated depending on the day. Both are real and neither is a plan.

So is it worth it?

Across published reviews the verdict splits cleanly, and it splits on the same line every time: whether the buyer wanted a ceremony or an object.

What the people who loved it say. Reviewers who went in as Star Wars fans describe it as among the best things Disney sells — the production, the lighting, the script, the moment the blade ignites. Several say they thought the price was absurd beforehand and did not think so afterwards.

The build quality of the finished lightsaber is praised consistently, including by people who dislike the price.

What the people who regretted it say. Disney Tourist Blog is blunt about the arithmetic: roughly 25 minutes of experience for $250, at a location whose capacity makes reservations painful. The recurring caution across reviews is that it is not for someone who is not already a fan, and that a family stretching to afford the trip should not stretch further for this.

Set it against the rest of the trip and the scale is clear. In our own price record, $274.99 is roughly two nights in a value resort, or between a third and a half of a seven-day park ticket, which runs $581 to $907 before tax. It is not a souvenir-sized decision.

Our reading. Worth it for the ritual, indefensible as a way to buy a lightsaber. If what you want is a lightsaber to own, Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities is a two-minute walk away and sells them for a fraction of this.

If what you want is the twenty minutes in the dark room with the music and the Gatherers, there is no cheaper way to buy it, and no one else sells it.

Who should skip Savi's Workshop

Anyone on a first visit with few days. The build consumes the better part of an hour in the middle of a park day, on top of the money, and a first trip has neither to spare. It is a returning-visitor purchase, when the headline attractions are done.

Two fans travelling together on one budget. The rule that only the builder builds makes this $549.98 for the pair. Droid Depot has the same rule, but two builds there cost $259.98.

Anyone buying it for a child who wants the object. A child who wants a lightsaber wants a lightsaber. The ceremony is aimed at someone old enough to be moved by it, and Disney's Florida guidance of five and older is a floor for participation, not a signal that a five-year-old will value the staging.

Anyone whose plans might change at short notice. Charged at booking, and the full price is kept for a cancellation inside 24 hours or a no-show. Cancel earlier and there is no fee, per MickeyBlog's report of the 2024 prepayment change. If there is a real chance of a sick day, this is the wrong $274.99.

Annual Passholders expecting a discount. There is not one, and Disney says so in the same sentence as the nonrefundable term.

How do you carry it for the rest of the day, and get it home?

Carrying a three-foot blade around a theme park for the rest of the day is the problem few write-ups mention, and at Walt Disney World the answer is currently worse than it used to be.

In the park. The carrying case is included and the hilt separates from the blade. Disneyland publishes a complimentary package hold service — show your receipt at Droid Depot or another participating shop and they keep your purchases until park close.

Walt Disney World does not currently offer the equivalent. Disney's own package pickup and delivery page no longer resolves and redirects to the general guest services index, checked 10 September 2026, and trade reporting describes the souvenir pick-up and resort delivery services as paused. Plan to carry it.

Shipping it home from your hotel. Disney's Mail Services page states that most resort hotels will ship pre-packed, pre-labeled packages from the Front Desk or Concierge desk, and that the business centres at Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa also ship for guests. Regular shipping and handling fees apply. Note the two words doing the work: pre-packed and pre-labeled.

The front desk is a drop-off, not a packing service.

Flying with it. The TSA permits toy lightsabers in both carry-on and checked bags, and says so on its own What Can I Bring list, adding — as it does for every item — that the officer at the checkpoint makes the final call.

The consistent advice across travel write-ups is carry-on rather than hold luggage, because the blade is long, thin, hollow plastic and baggage handling is not gentle with it. Pack it where you can reach it; you may be asked to switch it on.

What if it breaks, and what Disney will not tell you

Disney publishes no replacement blade price anywhere, and that is the honest state of it.

What is established: replacement blades for Savi's Workshop and Legacy lightsabers are sold only inside Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at the parks. They are not stocked on Disney's online shop. If the lightsaber is damaged while you are still at the resort, the reported course is to take it back to the Gatherers at Savi's Workshop, who assess whether it can be repaired or replaced.

What is not established: any published figure for what a replacement blade costs, or any warranty term. We looked for one on Disney's site and it is not there. Several guest accounts describe being charged for replacement blades after the fact; we have found no Disney statement setting a price, so we are not going to print a number and imply Disney stands behind it.

For parts rather than blades, WDW News Today reported in January 2026 that Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities sells metallic lightsaber parts at $24.99 and plastic pommels at $14.99 each when bought in pairs. That is a secondary source on a shop's shelf prices and it will move.

The practical consequence: once you are home, a broken blade is a trip back to Florida or a third-party seller. Factor that into a $274.99 object that a child is going to swing at furniture.

The cheaper ways to leave with a lightsaber

Three of them, in ascending order of money.

Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities, on the same street. Legacy lightsabers — replicas of the ones characters carry — are sold outright with no reservation, no ceremony and no 60-day booking window. This is the correct answer for anyone who wants the object.

Droid Depot, at $129.99. A hands-on build under the same one-builder rule, and at $259.98 for two it is the cheaper choice for a pair and the better one for younger children. Less than half the price of Savi's, and the thing you take home is something a child will actually play with.

The Youngling Saber Building Expo, free, and only at Disneyland, and only while it runs. Walk-up, standby, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, no lightsaber included.

A fourth option that is not cheaper but is more honest about what you are buying: skip the build and spend the $274.99 on an After Hours ticket plus a table-service dinner. Of every paid add-on Disney sells at Walt Disney World, After Hours is the only one whose value can be checked against a stopwatch.

Where these figures come from

Every price on this page was read from Disney's own pages on 10 September 2026 and is recorded with that date in our price register, alongside the resort rates and ticket prices used in the comparisons.

Disney raises these prices without announcement — Savi's Workshop has increased more than once since it opened, from $199.99 to $274.99 in Florida — which is why the figures here carry dates instead of being presented as current forever.

The durations, the group size of fourteen and the shop prices at Dok-Ondar's are secondary sources, named and tiered in the list below, because Disney publishes none of them. Where those sources disagree with each other, this page prints the disagreement instead of picking one.
