How to spend one day at Animal Kingdom — the order, from our own queue record

What order should you do Animal Kingdom in?

By when each queue is shortest, which our own record measures. We log every posted wait at Animal Kingdom every five minutes. Across the nine days from 5 to 13 September 2026, 27,073 readings, with the park open from 8am to 6pm or 7pm, this is what the rides averaged:

The middle of the day runs from four hours after opening to two hours before closing; the last hour is the hour before closing. These are posted waits, which Disney pads, and nine days of September is not a season, so read the pattern rather than the minute.

Does Early Theme Park Entry change the plan at Animal Kingdom?

Only in Pandora and at Everest. Guests at Disney Resort hotels and some nearby hotels get in 30 minutes before official opening every day, and at Animal Kingdom Disney plans just four rides for that half hour: Avatar Flight of Passage, Na'vi River Journey, Expedition Everest and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!.

Kilimanjaro Safaris and Kali River Rapids are not on the list and open with the park.

With early entry, go to Flight of Passage first. In our record from 6 to 21 September 2026 it was running at the start of early entry on all 16 mornings, and Na'vi River Journey and Zootopia were never down at opening either. At Hollywood Studios, by contrast, a headliner was down at opening on 6 of the same 16 mornings.

Without early entry, the plan above still holds. Kali River Rapids and Kilimanjaro Safaris are not on the early-entry list, so nobody has been queuing for them for half an hour when you arrive, and Everest was short in our first two hours anyway.

Since mid-2026 early-entry guests have been held at a checkpoint before Pizzafari that also blocks the way to Africa, so the safari does not get a head start from it.⁴

Should you ride Flight of Passage first?

Not in our record. Avatar Flight of Passage averaged 61 minutes in the first two hours, longer than its 53 at midday, and 34 in the last hour. So many people head to Pandora at opening that the queue there is at its worst.

Disney Tourist Blog's one-day plan, from January 2026, agrees on the evening: it saves both Avatar rides for the last 90 minutes. It only suggests Flight of Passage first for guests at the gate for the 8am opening. Flight of Passage is a Single Pass, and riders must be 44 inches.

What should you do first at Animal Kingdom?

Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids, which were near their shortest early: 13 and 6 minutes in the first two hours, against 31 and 39 at midday. Kali soaks you, which is why almost nobody wants it at 8am; Everest has no such excuse and was still short.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is the split. One planning site calls the morning the best time for animal activity and soft light, and says the safari is near a walk-on for the first 90 minutes.⁴ Our record has it at 39 minutes early, 26 at midday and 7 in the last hour.

If the animals matter, ride early and accept the queue; Disney Tourist Blog also suggests a second ride around sunset, when the animals are active again.

What should you do in the middle of the day?

The shows and the trails, in the heat. Festival of the Lion King ranked second of 46 Disney World shows on Sunshine Whispers' February 2026 list, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! 12th and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

Is Lightning Lane worth it for one day at Animal Kingdom?

Lightning Lane is not necessary at Animal Kingdom, and our record mostly agrees: Everest and Kali are short early, and Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey fall in the last hour. The case for a Single Pass on Flight of Passage is a short day, since the park closed at 6pm or 7pm across our window.

Lightning Lane opens seven days ahead for Disney hotel guests and three days for everyone else. Our Lightning Lane guide has the prices, and is Animal Kingdom worth it weighs the day as a whole.

Who should not follow this plan?

Families with small children, because three of the five rides have height limits: Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest 44 inches, and Kali River Rapids 38. The height checker sorts that out. Anyone who wants the animals at their liveliest should put the safari first whatever the queue.

And anyone visiting at a holiday, when nine days of September will not describe the queues.
