What first-timers wish they'd known about Disney World — seven sources, tallied and checked
The short answer
Across six published lists and a July 2026 forum thread of 20 first-timers, the lesson that comes up most is that you cannot do everything. Next come arriving early, resting, staying on site, bringing snacks and allowing time to get around. Two lists still describe FastPass+ or Genie+, both gone: since July 2024 the paid system is Lightning Lane.
What do first-time visitors say they wish they'd known?
We read six published "wish I'd known" lists, from 2016 to July 2026, and a TouringPlans forum thread from July 2026 in which 20 people answered the same question. This is how often each lesson came up, out of those seven sources, and where we checked it:

Is it true you cannot do everything at Disney World?
Five of the seven sources say so, more than any other lesson, and four of the twenty forum posters made it their one piece of advice. Disney Food Blog's version is about Magic Kingdom alone: one day is not enough to do everything in one park. The forum's fix was to plan the day, then cut one or two things before you go.

Does arriving early really make a difference?
Four sources say arrive before the park opens, and Disney's rules make it matter more for hotel guests. Early Theme Park Entry lets guests at Disney hotels into all four parks 30 minutes before opening, on Disney's own page. What do you get for staying at a Disney hotel?
Four sources say stay on site, and the perks are on Disney's own pages: Early Theme Park Entry at every park, free buses, boats, monorail and Skyliner, and free theme park parking. Lightning Lane passes open seven days before a Disney hotel stay, against three days for everyone else.
Restaurant bookings open at 60 days for the whole stay, up to ten nights, rather than one day at a time. Our hotel tier guide prices those perks against the room.
Which advice in these lists is out of date?
Some of it, and the oldest lists still rank well in search. FastPass+ and Genie+ are both gone. SmarterTravel's 2016 list tells you to use FastPass+, and Disney Dream Co, last updated in 2022, explains Genie+. On 24 July 2024 Disney renamed Genie+ as Lightning Lane Multi Pass and individual Lightning Lanes as Single Pass, according to Disney Parks Blog.

Park reservations appear on Disney Fanatic's January 2025 list, but Disney's own page says they are no longer required for date-based tickets. Annual Passes and a few special tickets still need one. Extra Magic Hours, on SmarterTravel's list, is now Early Theme Park Entry.
Can you bring your own food into Disney World?
Yes. Four sources recommend it, and Disney's park rules ban alcohol, glass containers, loose or dry ice, and bags or coolers larger than 24 by 15 by 18 inches, but not food. Kiddo Adventures and the forum posters add a refillable water bottle.

Why do first-timers underestimate getting around?
Four sources raise it, and Disney Food Blog's is the one that catches people most: you cannot park at Magic Kingdom. Its car park is at the Transportation and Ticket Center, across the lagoon, and the last leg is a monorail or ferry.
Disney's resort transportation starts 45 minutes before a park opens, on Disney's own page, so the first bus sets the earliest you can arrive. Our transportation guide has every route between the parks, with published times.
Do you really need to book restaurants 60 days ahead?
For the popular ones, yes, and three sources say so. What the lists leave out is the hotel rule. Disney's restaurant pages say guests at Disney hotels can book up to 60 days before arrival for the whole stay, up to ten nights.
Off site, each date opens 60 days before that date. Our dining reservations page names the tables that go within minutes.
How hot and wet does it get?
Three sources warn about the heat and the rain, and our own weather record puts numbers on it. From twelve years of daily observations, July has rain on 94% of days and only 10% of days that are pleasant, and September has rain on 84%. November is the most comfortable month, with 83% pleasant days.
