When is the best time to visit Walt Disney World?

Early December and the second half of January. Those are the two windows where Disney's quiet periods overlap with weather you would actually want to walk around in — December runs 72% pleasant days across our twelve-year record, and the first two weeks are among the calmest of the year before the Christmas surge.

Late January is cooler but empties out completely once Marathon Weekend has passed.

Every month at Walt Disney World, weather and crowds together

Pleasant days are days with a high between 70 and 85°F — measured, not estimated. They come from 4,384 days of daily observations at Walt Disney World between 2014-09-03 and 2026-09-03.

The crowd column is not ours, and it is the weakest column here. Our own wait record is days old, not years, so the bands come from published crowd calendars — WDW Prep School and Disney Tourist Blog, both named in the sources below — and they are bands rather than invented numbers for that reason.

What IS ours on timing is the operator's own forecast: Disney sets park hours months ahead and lengthens them for the dates it expects to be busy, and every month page carries that signal from the schedule we ingest twice a day.

It is a different question from "how long will I queue", and it is the one we can answer from measurement rather than from somebody else's estimate.

Why is the quietest month also the most uncomfortable?

Because the crowds and the weather are driven by the same thing — American school terms and Florida's climate move in opposite directions. September is the least crowded month of the year and has just 30% pleasant days with rain falling on 84% of them, in the middle of hurricane season.

The advice to "go in September, it's empty" is true and incomplete: it is empty because it is unpleasant.

Which month has the best weather at Walt Disney World?

November, at 83% pleasant days — comfortably the best of the twelve, and the reason it is not the automatic answer is Jersey Week and Thanksgiving. October at 73% and December at 72% follow.

The gap at the other end is stark: July manages 10% pleasant days with rain on 94% of them, which is not a heatwave but the normal condition of a Florida summer.

When should you absolutely not go?

24 December to 3 January, when Magic Kingdom can reach capacity and close its gates. Spring break — mid-March through Easter — is the other one to avoid: crowds are near-peak and the weather has not yet turned uncomfortable, so nothing thins them out.

This page used to name a third, the week of 4 July, and it was wrong. Our own crowd index puts July fourth-quietest of twelve, at 34.6%.

Disney Tourist Blog — a source this page cites by name — calls the Fourth of July week "consistently one of the best weeks to visit, not one of the worst", and the slowest week of summer for four years running. Our own July page had already been corrected; this one had not, so the site contradicted itself in two places.

The reason the old advice sounds right is that it used to be right. On the same index, July ran 65.4% before 2020. Aggressive annual pass blockouts, higher summer travel costs and people avoiding a week they assume is packed have moved it from mid-table to near the bottom.

July is still a month to think twice about — but for the heat, not the queues, and the next section is where that shows.

Disney's own pass blockouts agree on all three, and put a sharper edge on the third: it blocks twenty consecutive days from 13 March to 1 April 2027, the longest single stretch of the year. The next section reads that calendar in full.

Which dates does Disney itself treat as peak?

Every crowd calendar on the internet is somebody's estimate. There is one ranking of Disney World dates that is not an estimate, and Disney publishes it without ever calling it a crowd calendar: the blockout dates on its own annual passes.

Blocking a passholder out of a park is Disney forgoing a sunk-cost visitor to keep a paying one, so it only does it on the dates it expects to fill anyway. Read the four tiers side by side and you get Disney's own demand ranking, in writing, dated.

Across the 380 days from 16 September 2026 to 30 September 2027, the Incredi-Pass is blocked on none of them, the Sorcerer Pass on 17, the Pirate Pass on 63 and the Pixie Dust Pass on 148.

The 17 days Disney blocks even on the Sorcerer Pass are its declared busiest of the year:

• 25–28 November 2026 — Thanksgiving, Wednesday to Saturday
• 20 December 2026 – 1 January 2027

That is the whole list. Everything else in the year, Disney is willing to let a Sorcerer passholder walk in.

The next band down — blocked on the Pirate Pass — is the rest of what Disney counts as peak:

• 10–12 October 2026 (Columbus Day weekend)
• 20–28 November 2026 (Thanksgiving, the full nine days)
• 19 December 2026 – 2 January 2027
• 16–18 January 2027 (Martin Luther King Jr. weekend)
• 13–15 February 2027 (Presidents' Day weekend)
• 13 March – 1 April 2027 — twenty consecutive days
• 29–31 May 2027 (Memorial Day weekend)
• 1–4 July 2027
• 4–6 September 2027 (Labor Day weekend)

The spring break block is the finding worth sitting with. At twenty consecutive days it is longer than Disney's Christmas blockout and more than twice Thanksgiving, and unlike those two it is not a holiday anybody circles on a calendar.

It is the single longest stretch of the year Disney expects to be busy, and it is the one most likely to catch you out, because there is no obvious date to avoid — the whole second half of March is it.

Is August a good time to go?

August is the honest edge case. Crowds are low and prices drop, which is why it appears on cheap-trip lists, and it delivers 12% pleasant days with rain on 94% of them. It works only for people who plan around the heat rather than through it: mornings in the parks, afternoons at the pool, evenings back out.

Anyone intending to tour all day should choose another month.

How does this compare with a crowd calendar?

A crowd calendar answers half the question. It tells you how long the queues will be and says nothing about whether you will enjoy standing in them, which is why the standard advice keeps pointing at September and August.

What is this built from?

The weather is ours: 4,384 days of daily observations from 2014-09-03 to 2026-09-03, from which the pleasant-day and rain-day percentages are computed directly, not quoted. The crowd levels are not ours and are marked as bands, not numbers, because our wait-time record currently spans days, not years. Publishing a crowd score off that would be invention.

When the record is long enough, this page carries our own figures and says so.

Are Halloween and Christmas party nights a good time to go?

Party nights are the one timing lever nobody frames as timing. From 7 August to 22 December 2026, Magic Kingdom holds 63 hard-ticket party nights — 38 Halloween, 25 Christmas — and on each of them the park closes to ordinary day tickets at 6:00pm. We measured what that does, logging Disney's posted wait for every Magic Kingdom ride every five minutes.

Both halves of a party day are quieter, and they are quieter for different people. The evening is quieter because almost everyone has gone home and only ticket holders remain: waits from 7pm to 10pm ran 44% below an ordinary evening.

The daytime is quieter because day guests avoid a day that throws them out at six: 33% below, and you need no party ticket at all to use it.

So a party night is worth weighing against a whole quiet week. Buying one evening costs $119 to $229 a head by date, and it buys the emptiest Magic Kingdom hours available at any point in the year — including the shoulder weeks this page otherwise recommends. Choosing a party day and leaving at six costs nothing and still takes a third off the queues.

Two cautions, and the first one bites. Book far earlier than you think. On 16 September 2026 Disney's purchase page offered exactly one of the 38 Halloween nights; the Christmas season still had all 25. And the days without a party absorb the displaced crowd, so a single party-free day wedged between two party nights is busier than any crowd calendar will tell you.

This is three party nights against three ordinary evenings in one September week, not a season. Posted waits are padded by Disney, so the real queues on both sides were shorter. We rerun the comparison as the record grows.
