Disney hurricane policy: when you can cancel a Disney World trip free, and what happens to a Disney cruise

What is Disney World's hurricane policy?

In Disney's words, the trigger is a hurricane warning from the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area, or for where you live, within 7 days of your arrival date. You may then reschedule or cancel a Walt Disney Travel Company package, and most room-only reservations booked directly with Disney, with no cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney.

What it does not cover. Flights, other hotels, car rental and travel insurance keep their own fees, and Disney says the policy does not apply to certain special events or dining experiences. It is triggered only by a hurricane warning: not a watch, and not a tropical storm warning.⁴ It also covers Disney's Vero Beach and Hilton Head resorts when a warning is issued there.

What happens if you reschedule?

Everything you paid Disney moves to the new trip, but the deal may not. Disney's FAQ says cast members will rebook you on the same special offer if it is available on your new dates, otherwise look for alternatives, and that you pay the package price for the new dates.

A room-only discount or a free-dining offer can vanish in the move, so check before you commit to a date.

Book with Disney if you want the protection. Disney Food Blog points out that anything booked through a third party follows that company's rules, not Disney's.

What happens to park tickets if the parks close?

Disney says that on the rare occasions the parks close for a tropical storm or hurricane, partially used multi-day tickets may be extended for a limited time, and wholly unused tickets may be given a new start date. Check Disney's weather updates page for closures.

How often does Disney World close for hurricanes?

Rarely, and briefly. WDW Magazine's April 2026 list counts ten hurricanes that closed or shortened park days since 1999:

• Floyd, 1999 — Closed early 14 September, part of 15 September
• Charley, 2004 — Closed early 13 August
• Frances, 2004 — Closed 4 to 5 September
• Jeanne, 2004 — Closed 26 September
• Matthew, 2016 — Closed early 6 October and on 7 October
• Irma, 2017 — Closed early 9 September, then 10 and 11 September
• Dorian, 2019 — Closed early 3 September
• Ian, 2022 — Closed 28 to 29 September
• Nicole, 2022 — Closed early 9 November to midday 10 November
• Milton, 2024 — Closed early 9 October and on 10 October

WDW Magazine adds that Animal Kingdom and the water parks can stay shut longer for clean-up, that transport stops when the parks close, and that hotels keep some dining open for guests.

What happens to a Disney cruise in a hurricane?

The ship goes around the storm, and that is not a cancellation. Disney Cruise Line's terms let it change, substitute, postpone, cancel or skip any port or sailing at its sole discretion, without liability for the loss. A swapped port or a changed route is not refunded.

Cancellations and long delays are. If Disney cancels your cruise, or delays it by more than three calendar days and you do not take the alternative, you may request a refund or cruise credit by emailing Caserequest@disneycruise.com within 90 days of the original sail date, with your confirmation, proof of payment and the notice. That is how both published summaries of Disney's terms put it.

Should you avoid hurricane season?

Not necessarily. The season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the statistical peak is 10 September, according to the National Hurricane Center. September is also the emptiest month in the parks; our best time to visit guide weighs the trade.

The practical rules: book Disney parts directly with Disney so the policy covers them, insure the parts Disney does not, and watch the National Hurricane Center in the week before you travel, since only a warning inside 7 days opens the free change.
