Walt Disney World in September
The short answer
September at Walt Disney World averages a high of 86°F and tops 90°F on 9% of days. Some rain falls on 85% of days, but only 42% get a quarter inch or more, among the three wettest months. Magic Kingdom closes early to day guests on 11 of the 26 days we hold hours for.
Should you go to Walt Disney World in September?
The quietest month of the year, and the one that asks the most in return. Waits are the shortest, room rates are the lowest, and the parks feel genuinely uncrowded in a way they do not at any other point on the calendar.
The price is weather. September sits on the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season — 10 September, according to the National Hurricane Center — and it is still hot. Most September trips are unaffected by a storm. The ones that are affected are affected badly, and that is the trade being made.

These are not crowd levels. We do not publish a crowd index, because we do not have the years of wait data an honest one needs. The label describes the strength of the demand drivers named in the last column — school holidays, race weekends, ticketed party nights and rate seasons — every one of which you can check against a calendar. Where a busyness ranking is another publication’s judgment, it is attributed to them by name.
How long the queues actually are in September
On Queue-Times’ crowd index, September now runs at 29.4%, which makes it the quietest of the twelve months for queueing. Before 2020 the same month ran at 32.6%.

The parks do not agree in September. EPCOT runs at 42% against a four-park average of 29.4% — 13 points busier than the month as a whole. Booking a park day on the headline figure would get this one wrong.
This is queue length, not attendance. Crowd level is Queue-Times’ own index, built primarily from posted wait times, where 0% is the quietest day in their record since 2014 and 100% the busiest. Disney reported attendance up 3% in the quarter to June 2026 while average waits fell — reopened rides, new parades pulling people out of queues, longer hours and less Lightning Lane inventory all shorten a line without removing anyone from the park. A low number here means you will queue less. It does not mean the walkways will be empty.

How long the parks are open — and what Disney expects
10.8 hours average operating day across 130 park-days, 6 parks
Disney publishes park hours months ahead and sets them on its own forecast: a longer operating day is Disney committing staff and utilities because it expects the park to be busy. It is not a crowd level, and we are not going to print one we cannot support — it is the operator’s own expectation, in a number they publish and you can check.
We hold published hours for 2 months so far — Disney releases them roughly six months out. A month-against-month ranking appears here once there are at least 6 to compare, not a position calculated from two.

Nights the parks close early
A hard-ticket evening event closes the park to regular day guests hours before its usual time. With an ordinary park ticket you are asked to leave; with a party ticket you get in from the afternoon. Either way, booking one of these dates without knowing costs you an evening.

Extended Evening hours
Open to Deluxe and Deluxe Villa resort guests, and far quieter than the same park in daylight. Disney has at times extended it to other hotels on property; we have not been able to confirm the current list against Disney’s own page, so check before you count on it.

Early Entry ran on 81 park-days this September. It opens every park roughly 30 minutes early, every day of your stay including check-in and check-out day, for guests of Disney resort hotels and a short list of others — the Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve and Shades of Green among them.
What’s actually running in September
Food & Wine is in full swing all month — and the September lull does not reach it. This is the one thing on this page that most guides get wrong, and we got it wrong ourselves first: on the queue record EPCOT runs at 42% in September against 44% in October, while Magic Kingdom drops to 24% and Hollywood Studios to 20%. The festival holds EPCOT up while the rest of the property empties.
So September is an excellent month to do Food & Wine and a poor month to expect it quiet. If short queues are what you came for, spend the mornings at the other three parks and treat EPCOT as the evening.
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs on a dozen or more September nights, and Magic Kingdom closes early to day guests on each of them. Those days have an upside: in our own wait record for the second week of September, posted waits from 9am to 4pm ran 33% lower on party days than on ordinary ones, because many day guests avoid them. Who September is right for
Anyone who wants the shortest waits and lowest prices of the year and can carry the weather risk. Particularly good for repeat visitors, for adults, and for anyone doing Food & Wine seriously.
And who should pick another month
Anyone travelling on a non-refundable booking with no insurance, and anyone who cannot absorb a disrupted day or a cancelled flight. Also wrong for guests who need long park hours; September closings are earlier than summer, and party nights cut Magic Kingdom evenings short.
The mistake people make booking September
Treating hurricane season as an abstraction. Walt Disney World handles storms well and rarely closes for long, but flights are the real exposure — book refundable or insured, and do not schedule the one irreplaceable thing on the trip for the first day. The second trap is the party calendar: on party nights Magic Kingdom shuts to day tickets in the early evening.
