Booking a Disney cruise through a travel agent: what it costs, what you get, and moving a booking you already made

Does booking through a travel agent cost more?

No. Disney Cruise Line's own booking FAQ lists three ways to book: online, by calling Disney, or through your travel agent. MouseSavers, updated 13 September 2026, says the fare through a good agent "isn't any higher than if you booked through Disney", and a TouringPlans forum member who books through agents says the same.

The agent is paid a commission by Disney after you sail. That is why the big agencies can hand part of it back as onboard credit, and why a small one often cannot.

Some agents now charge a fee. One TouringPlans forum member reported a $25 booking fee in 2024, and an agent in the same thread explained why: the planning work is unpaid until the trip happens, and some people never book. Ask before you start.

How much onboard credit do Disney travel agents give?

Two large agencies publish their tables, and they agree on the shape: about $50 of onboard credit for every $1,000 of cruise fare, and half that for a booking you transfer to them or make on board. Small World Vacations starts at $1,000 of fare; Magic Bound Travel starts at $2,000, one step lower all the way up.

Both count the cruise fare only, not taxes, port fees, gratuities or insurance. Both void the credit if you cancel, and neither pays it out as cash. You spend it on anything charged to your stateroom.

Not every agent can match this. A travel agent on the TouringPlans forum warned in 2024 that agents working alone under a host agency often cannot offer onboard credit at all, because it would eat the whole commission. The credit is a large-agency perk, not a rule.

How do you move a Disney cruise you already booked to a travel agent?

Disney calls it a booking transfer. Your cruise, stateroom and price stay as they are; only the agent on the reservation changes. Disney's current Booking Transfer Request Form, dated May 2025, sets the rules:

• Within 30 days of the original booking.
• Not paid in full. A paid-in-full reservation is not eligible.
• At least 7 days before you sail.
• One adult on the reservation signs, in ink or by DocuSign. Typed signatures are refused.
• One form per reservation, even when several are travelling together.
• Disney approves each one at its own discretion.

The simplest route, according to Disney's planDisney panel, is to give the agent your reservation number and let them start it. The agency then sends the signed form to Disney Cruise Line.

An older Disney Cruise Line version of the form, still on Disney's site, does not mention the 30 days but adds that the reservation must be in the same currency. The current form and planDisney both say 30 days. Plan on 30.

Agencies set their own minimums on top. Small World Vacations takes transfers over $1,000 of fare that were not booked with another agency and do not include airfare. Magic Bound Travel takes them over $2,000.

What about a placeholder you booked on board?

Disney's onboard offer is a placeholder: book it in the Navigator app while you are sailing, save 10% on the voyage fare, and choose a sailing within 24 months. It can go to an agent too. Disney's planDisney panel says you can name your agent at the time you book the placeholder, which saves a transfer later.

If you forget, the same 30-day transfer applies.

Once a placeholder is with an agent, the agent picks the sail date with you; Disney's FAQ sends advisor-booked placeholders back to the advisor. Both agencies above give the reduced credit, half the new-booking rate, on placeholders made on board.

What do you give up by using an agent?

Changes go through the agent. Disney's FAQ lets you change sail dates, guests and staterooms online, but adds: if your reservation is booked through a travel agency, contact your travel agent to make any modifications. People who like to change things at midnight themselves feel this most.

Refunds and fees run through the agency. Disney Cruise Line's transfer authorization form warns that some agents keep an agency cancellation fee, and that Disney is not responsible for a refund the agent owes you. Ask about both before you sign.

A bad agent is worse than none. One TouringPlans forum member found, at final payment, that their agent had never sent the deposit. By then the fare had risen and the stateroom they wanted was gone. Get the Disney reservation number from your agent, and confirm with Disney Cruise Line that the deposit arrived.

How do you pick a good Disney travel agent?

Look for Authorized Disney Vacation Planner on the agency's website: a logo of a Mickey hat over the word Disney. Disney's planDisney panel adds that these agencies carry an Earmarked status, from bronze to diamond, awarded by Disney.

Then ask three things:

• What onboard credit do you give, and on transfers? The published tables above are the benchmark.
• Do you charge a fee?
• Who is on the phone when bookings open? One forum member's agency puts a whole team on the line when bookings open. One 2024 post reported waits of up to six hours for guests calling Disney themselves on Silver booking day. See our booking windows page for when your day falls.

Members also credit their agents with rebooking when a better fare or offer appears, and with handling the calls to Disney.

Is a travel agent worth it for a Disney cruise?

For most bookings over $2,000, yes: the fare is the same and the credit is money you do not get from Disney. It is worth most on a first cruise, a large party, or a trip with a hotel stay and transfers to arrange.
