How do Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay compare?

Castaway Cay is the easier day and Lookout Cay the better beach. Every other difference follows from where the ship ties up: at Castaway Cay you walk a short way from the gangway to the family beach, and at Lookout Cay you walk a half-mile pier and then ride a tram.

How far do you walk at each island?

A few minutes at Castaway Cay, and 25 to 30 minutes from ship to beach at Lookout Cay. The Points Guy measured Lookout Cay's pier at about 0.6 miles each way with an Apple Watch, in full sun, and put the Castaway Cay tram a two- or three-minute walk from the ship.

The Lookout Cay pier exists because Disney chose not to dredge the reef, so the ship docks in deep water.

At Lookout Cay a tram then runs about 10 minutes from Mabrika Cove to the main beaches, and WDW News Today says guests may not walk that stretch. EverythingMouse warns that a midday trip back to the ship can take close to an hour, which is why people there stay ashore all day.

At Castaway Cay families go back aboard for lunch or a nap and return.

Disney runs an accessible cart shuttle along the Lookout Cay pier for guests with disabilities, first come, first served. At both islands the trams take personal and electric wheelchairs but not sand wheelchairs, Disney says.

Which island has the better beach and water?

Lookout Cay, in most reviews. Its family beach is soft, pink-tinted sand that The Disney Cruise Line Blog measures at well over 500 yards, and the water is clearer open sea. Castaway Cay's family beach sits behind a rocky breakwater, which makes the water calm but the sand stonier, and EverythingMouse advises water shoes there.

Open ocean cuts both ways. Castaway Cay has a snorkel lagoon, 12 acres by Disney's count and 22 by WDW News Today's, with sunken features to find. Lookout Cay has no designated snorkel area, and the water is more changeable; one DISboards poster reported wind so strong that no umbrellas could be put up.

For small children or weak swimmers, the lagoon is the safer bet.

The adults-only beaches differ most. Castaway Cay's Serenity Bay is almost a mile from the family beach, Disney says, with its own tram stop. Lookout Cay's is contiguous with the family beach, separated by a few cones in EverythingMouse's description, which is the commonest adult complaint about it.

How long do you get at each island?

About seven hours ashore at either, and we can only measure one of them. Our own ship-tracking record holds 124 Castaway Cay calls, with a median of 6.8 hours tied up, first stationary at 07:25 and last at 16:13; our Castaway Cay day length page breaks that down by ship.

Lookout Cay is beyond most of our receivers. The record holds three calls there, all in early 2025, too few to publish a typical day.

Wandering in Disney puts it at roughly seven hours, ashore between 8 and 9 a.m. and back between 3:30 and 5 p.m. Remember that at Lookout Cay the pier and tram take perhaps an hour of that day in transit, round trip.

What does each island cost beyond the fare?

Nothing, if you want a beach day: the beaches, loungers, umbrellas, towels, lunch, soft-serve and water play are included at both. The extras differ in price only at the edges.

No Disney price was readable for any of these on 24 September 2026, so every figure is an outlet's. EverythingMouse's July 2026 lists give $34 snorkel gear and the $64 stingray encounter at Castaway Cay and the full Lookout Cay list; WDW News Today's December 2025 guide says $38 for Castaway Cay snorkel gear, and Bright Color Mom and Cruise Vacation Planner $44.

Bikes are the open question at Lookout Cay. Disney's fact sheet lists bicycle rentals, but Mouse Hacking reported them still unavailable on 29 January 2026, and EverythingMouse wrote in July 2026 that it was still not sure they are offered.

Which island do cruisers prefer?

Neither wins outright. Reviewers split along one line: Lookout Cay for the beach, Castaway Cay for the day.

For Lookout Cay: Mouse Hacking prefers it for the beach, the crowding and the character greetings. Disney Park Nerds, reviewing in June 2026 after Disney fixed early problems, calls it the prettier beach. One DISboards poster with fifteen Castaway Cay visits behind him chose Lookout Cay after one.

For Castaway Cay: EverythingMouse would still choose it every time, for the short walk, the theming and a real adults' beach. In a January 2025 DISboards thread, most posters who picked a side chose Castaway Cay, citing the pier, shade, mature landscaping and the 5K; a May 2025 thread came out roughly even.

The recurring Lookout Cay complaints are the unshaded pier, tram waits, the adult beach being only roped off, bikes not running and thinner cultural programming than promised. WDW News Today also reported in February 2026 that the beach in front of several Mabrika Cove cabanas had nearly gone, the second such report in a year.

Which island should you choose?

Castaway Cay for young children, limited mobility, a first cruise or a day that includes the ship. Lookout Cay for a beach-first day, adults who want Bahamian culture and Junkanoo, and anyone who has been to Castaway Cay before.
