Is Disney World dying? What attendance, spending and prices actually show

The short answer

No. Disney World has fewer visitors than before the pandemic, but it is making more money than ever. Industry estimates put its four parks at about 49 million visits in 2024, against 59 million in 2019. Disney reports record park revenue, and domestic attendance was up 3% in spring 2026. Fewer people are paying more each.

Is Disney World losing visitors?

Yes, compared with 2019, on the best estimates available. Disney does not publish attendance for individual parks. The standard reference is the Themed Entertainment Association's yearly index, and its figures for Walt Disney World tell a clear story:

Magic Kingdom is still the most visited theme park in the world, and all four parks edged up from 2023 to 2024, the Orlando Sentinel reported. But roughly ten million fewer visits a year is not a rounding error.

Treat Animal Kingdom's line with care. A park losing more than a third of its visitors while EPCOT barely moved is the kind of change an estimate can exaggerate. TEA's numbers are modelled, not counted turnstiles, and Disney does not confirm or correct them.

Is Disney making less money from its parks?

No, the opposite. Disney's own quarterly results, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, show its Experiences division, which includes the parks, cruises and resorts, setting records through 2026:

Disney blamed the dip early in 2026 partly on "continued softness in international visitation". In the spring quarter it said Walt Disney World "had a stand-out quarter", with more domestic tourists and annual passholders and help from summer promotions. The division's operating income that quarter was $3.02 billion, up 20%.

The pattern across the three quarters is the one that matters: attendance roughly flat, and each guest spending 4% to 5% more than a year earlier.

Why do people say Disney World is dying?

Mostly because of price, and the feeling that it has left ordinary families behind. Disney's one-day Magic Kingdom ticket reaches $219 on the dearest days of 2027, up from a $209 peak in 2026, WDWMAGIC reported when 2027 tickets went on sale in April 2026. A Magic Kingdom ticket cost $3.50 when the park opened in 1971.

The forum reaction to that price rise sums up the mood. WDWMAGIC regulars wondered how soon a ticket would pass $300, and one wrote that when it becomes cheaper to fly to Tokyo Disneyland and stay a week, "mistakes have been made".

The numbers above support half of that feeling. Fewer people are going than in 2019, and those who go spend more. What they do not support is the word dying: a business with record revenue and rising profit is choosing fewer, higher-paying guests, not failing.

Our guide to why Disney World is so expensive sets out how that strategy works.

Has Epic Universe hurt Disney World?

Not in Disney's reported numbers so far. Universal opened Epic Universe, a few miles away, on 22 May 2025. Disney's chief financial officer, Hugh Johnston, told investors in February 2025 that Disney had anticipated "some small impact" and built it into its forecasts, Attractions Magazine reported.

Walt Disney World's "stand-out" spring quarter in 2026 came nearly a year after Epic Universe opened. Universal's two older Orlando parks were the ones shrinking before it arrived: the Orlando Sentinel reported Universal Studios Florida down 2.6% and Islands of Adventure down 5.5% in 2024.

TEA published its 2024 estimates at the end of October 2025, so the first full year with Epic Universe in it, 2025, should follow in late 2026. We will add it here when it is published.

What does this mean for your trip?

Fewer visitors across a year does not mean empty parks on the day you go. Disney prices tickets by date, and demand still bunches around holidays and school breaks. What softer demand does bring is discounts: Disney credited "effective summer promotions" with part of its spring 2026 growth.

So the practical move is the same as ever. Pick your dates with our best time to visit guide, price the whole trip with what Disney World costs, and check for promotions before you book.

Common questions

Is Disney World dying?
No. It has fewer visitors than in 2019, about 49 million estimated visits in 2024 against 59 million, but Disney reports record park revenue in 2026 and domestic attendance up 3% in the spring quarter.
Is Disney World attendance down?
Compared with 2019, yes: TEA's estimates show the four parks down about 16% by 2024. Year to year it is roughly flat, with Disney reporting domestic park attendance up 1%, down 1% and up 3% in the three quarters of 2026.
Why is Disney World less busy?
Disney points to weaker international visitation in early 2026. Fans point to price: tickets reach $219 a day at Magic Kingdom on peak dates in 2027, and Disney says each guest is spending 4% to 5% more a year.
Is Disney still making money from its parks?
More than ever. Disney's Experiences division reported record revenue of $10 billion in the last quarter of 2025, and $3.02 billion in operating income from April to June 2026, up 20% on a year earlier.
Is EPCOT losing visitors?
Less than any other Disney World park. TEA estimates EPCOT at 12.13 million visits in 2024 against 12.44 million in 2019, down about 3%, while Magic Kingdom fell 15% and Animal Kingdom 37% over the same years.
Did Epic Universe take visitors from Disney World?
Not visibly yet. Epic Universe opened on 22 May 2025, and Disney called Walt Disney World's spring 2026 quarter a stand-out, with domestic attendance up 3%. The first full-year estimates including Epic Universe are due from TEA in late 2026.
