When to ride

Average wait by hour, from 6,025 of our own observations of this ride while it was open, over 17 days.

Rope drop or the last hour — it is one of the few Magic Kingdom attractions that holds a long wait all day, not clearing in the evening. On hard-ticket Halloween party nights it runs in complete darkness with a different soundtrack, and the queue is a fraction of the daytime one.

How the queue has changed

Its average posted wait was 70 minutes in 2017 and 28 in 2025–26 — down 60%. That is the 7th-longest average queue of the 31 attractions Queue-Times tracks at Magic Kingdom.

Is it accessible?

• You must transfer from a wheelchair or ECV to the ride vehicle.

What boarding is like

Transfer required. The ride is jerky and the restraint is a lap bar only — anyone with back or neck problems should skip it rather than test it.

What it’s actually like

Fast, jerky and in near-total darkness — you cannot see the track ahead, so every turn is a surprise. No inversions and no big drops, but the ride is rough and the lap bar is the only restraint. The darkness, not the speed, is what frightens children here.

Common questions

Is the wait for Space Mountain worst in the middle of the day?

Yes, and it is the flattest curve of the four headline Magic Kingdom rides. Our own record over 5,653 readings from 5 to 17 September 2026 puts it at 32 minutes at noon against 17 at nine in the morning and 15 in the last hour. It does not clear in the evening the way Pirates does — it only softens.

Does Space Mountain go upside down?

No. There are no inversions and no big drops. What makes it feel wilder than it is measures out as sharp, jerky turns taken in near-total darkness, so you cannot see them coming.

Why is Space Mountain rougher than it looks?

The track is tight and the cars are small and stiff, so the jolts go through you rather than around you. Anyone with back or neck trouble should treat it as the roughest ride at Magic Kingdom, ahead of Big Thunder.

How tall do you have to be for Space Mountain?

44 inches, which is the tallest requirement of any Magic Kingdom ride a young child is likely to ask for. Big Thunder is 38 and Seven Dwarfs is 38, so this is usually the last of the three a child grows into.
