Disney Cruise Line
Disney cruise deposits, final payment, cancellation fees and insurance
The short answer
A new Disney cruise booking needs a 10% deposit, with the balance due 90 days before a sailing of up to five nights or 120 days before a longer one. Cancel before that and you get everything back; after it, fees climb until they reach 100% two weeks out. Concierge deposits and guaranteed-stateroom fares are never refundable.
How much is the deposit on a Disney cruise, and when is final payment due?
The deposit on a new booking is 10% of the voyage fare, before taxes and port fees. Disney Cruise Line cut it from 20% on 18 June 2025; bookings made on or before 17 June 2025 keep the 20% they agreed to. You can hold a sailing for up to 3 days before paying anything.
Final payment depends on the length of the sailing. Disney's own booking terms say only that the balance "must be received on the date determined at the time of booking", so the date printed on your reservation is the one that counts. The outlets we checked agree on these dates, with one exception covered below:
Sailing | Final payment due | Deposit refundable? |
|---|---|---|
1 to 5 nights, standard stateroom | 90 days before sailing | Yes, until 90 days out |
6 nights or more, standard stateroom | 120 days before sailing | Yes, until 120 days out |
Concierge or suite, any length | 90 or 120 days, as above | No, from the day you book |
Guaranteed stateroom (IGT, OGT, VGT) | In full when you book | No |
Concierge used to pay earlier: 120 days for short sailings and 150 days for longer ones, until Disney moved it into line with other staterooms on 24 September 2024.
One travel agency's policy page still lists concierge final payment at 45 and 56 days.17 The same page says a concierge booking can be cancelled free at 45 days or more, which Disney's own fee table contradicts, so we treat both figures as out of date.
You must be paid in full before you can book Palo, Port Adventures or the spa, even when your booking window opens earlier. On sailings of up to five nights, Gold, Platinum and Pearl members reach their window before the balance is due; on longer sailings, Pearl members and concierge guests do. Our booking windows guide has the dates by tier.
What happens if you miss the final payment date?
Disney's terms are blunt: failing to meet the deposit or final payment schedule "will result in the automatic cancellation" of the reservation. Once it is cancelled, Disney's FAQ says the original price and stateroom are not guaranteed, and a special-offer rate may not come back.
Forum experience is more forgiving than the wording, though no one should plan on it. In a February 2020 forum thread, a family on their tenth cruise found their reservation cancelled for a missed payment, phoned Disney the next morning and had it reinstated at the original price.28 One case, six years old, is not a policy.
Watch for small balances after you have paid. Disney's terms let it pass on increases in taxes, fees and port expenses even after final payment; every other price change is frozen once you pay on time. A September 2024 thread on the same forum describes a balance of 4 cents appearing days before sailing with a cancellation warning attached.
Regulars there advised paying it rather than testing the system.
What are Disney Cruise Line's cancellation fees?
Fees are set by two things: how long the sailing is, and whether you booked a standard stateroom or a concierge room or suite. Disney's US terms, revised May 2026, set out four schedules. Fees are per guest, and "vacation price" means the whole package price for that guest.
Standard staterooms
Days before sailing | 1 to 5 nights | 6 nights or more |
|---|---|---|
No fee | 90 days or more | 120 days or more |
You lose the deposit | 89 to 45 days | 119 to 56 days |
50% of the vacation price | 44 to 30 days | 55 to 30 days |
75% of the vacation price | 29 to 15 days | 29 to 15 days |
100% of the vacation price | 14 days or less | 14 days or less |
Concierge staterooms and suites
Days before sailing | 1 to 5 nights | 6 nights or more |
|---|---|---|
You lose the deposit | 45 days or more | 56 days or more |
50% of the vacation price | 44 to 30 days | 55 to 30 days |
75% of the vacation price | 29 to 15 days | 29 to 15 days |
100% of the vacation price | 14 days or less | 14 days or less |
Guaranteed staterooms with restrictions carry a 100% fee from the moment you pay.
Three rules catch people out. Changing the sail date or a guest's name counts as a cancellation. A travel agent may keep an agency fee of its own on top.
And cancelling the cruise cancels any flights booked through Disney: flexible fares on US flights cost $200 a guest from 55 to 30 days out and $300 inside 29 days, while restricted fares are non-refundable from booking.
What changed about Disney cruise cancellation fees in June 2025?
The fee for cancelling in the deposit window fell with the deposit. Since 18 June 2025, cancelling a standard stateroom in that window costs the deposit you paid, so 10% of the voyage fare on a new booking. Reservations made before the change still forfeit 20%.14
Two other points came with it. A guest outside the fee window could cancel an old booking and rebook under the new terms. And a placeholder converted into a sailing of seven nights or more needs only a 5% deposit, so the deposit-window fee on it is 5% too.
Disney's own placeholder terms promise a "reduced deposit" on those sailings without printing the figure.
Concierge did not change: its deposit stays non-refundable. The concierge schedule above dates from 24 September 2024, when Disney also moved concierge final payment to 90 and 120 days.
How much does Disney's Vacation Protection Plan cost, and what does it cover?
The plan costs 8% of the per-person voyage fare, according to Disney's own travel-agent flier and two independent sources. Disney's public plan page no longer prints a price, and the flier describes an earlier version of the plan with lower limits, so check the quote before you add it.
One comparison site sampled three family itineraries and found premiums of about 7% to 8% of the total cruise cost.
Disney's plan page, read on 24 September 2026, lists these limits:
Benefit | Limit | Condition |
|---|---|---|
Trip cancellation and interruption | Trip cost, up to $20,000 | Sickness, injury, death and other covered reasons |
Trip delay | Up to $500 | Delays of 6 hours or more; the insurer adds a $150 daily cap |
Medical treatment | Up to $20,000 | Illness or injury on the trip |
Medical evacuation | Up to $50,000 | Emergency transport and repatriation |
Baggage loss | Up to $3,000 | The insurer caps each item at $500 |
Baggage delay | Up to $500 | Bags delayed 24 hours or more |
The part no outside policy copies is "Cancel For Any Reason". Cancel for a reason the insurance does not cover and Disney gives you a future cruise credit worth 75% of the cancellation fee. The credit lasts one year, cannot be transferred or cashed, cannot pay a deposit, and you must cancel before the ship sails.
The deadline is earlier than most people expect. You must pay for the plan by final payment or by the date any charge becomes non-refundable, whichever comes first. A concierge deposit is non-refundable at once, so concierge guests have to add it when they book.
Disney's terms also say the plan does not take effect until final payment is made.
Should you buy Disney's plan or third-party travel insurance?
Most outside advice favours third-party cover for medical risk and Disney's plan only for its future cruise credit. The limits above are the reason: $20,000 of medical cover and $50,000 for an evacuation are low for a sea voyage.
One comparison site, which sells third-party policies and so has an interest, recommends $100,000 of medical and $250,000 of evacuation cover a person, and says its family plans cost about 2% of the trip.20
Disney's plan covers what you booked through Disney. Flights and hotels you arranged yourself are outside it, which is the gap one travel advisor tells flying families to close first.21 The comparison site adds that Disney excludes conditions treated in the 60 days before cover starts, where many outside policies waive them if bought soon after the deposit.
Disney's plan does win in three places, the same comparison concedes. You can buy it, cancel-for-any-reason included, right up to final payment, while outside policies usually need buying within two or three weeks of the deposit for that feature. Its price does not rise with age.
And its baggage limits are higher than many outside plans.
Cruisers on one planning forum split the same way. In March 2026 one paid $90 for two on a last-minute three-night sailing and called it a no-brainer; another insures the whole trip through a comparison site "for a similar price or less".
In August 2026 a family who bought Disney's plan for its cancel-any-reason credit called it "definitely expensive", and another poster worried about a credit that expires in a year.25
What special offers is Disney Cruise Line running now?
Disney listed 9 offers on its special-offers page when we read it on 24 September 2026. The ones most US cruisers can use:
Offer | Saving | Key terms |
|---|---|---|
Guaranteed stateroom with restrictions (IGT, OGT, VGT) | Up to 25% from Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, San Diego and Galveston; up to 30% on a Vancouver sailing | Paid in full at booking, non-refundable, no name changes, Disney picks the room and it may have an obstructed view |
Florida residents | Up to 30% on select Bahamas and Caribbean sailings | Proof of residency at check-in, 50 staterooms per sailing, works on new and existing bookings |
Southern California residents | Up to 30% on select sailings from San Diego | Select stateroom categories and dates |
Canadian residents | Up to 25% | Select stateroom categories |
US military rates | Not stated | New bookings only, 50 staterooms per category per sailing, one stateroom per service member |
US military onboard credit | $250 per reservation | Select Disney Wish and Disney Dream sailings from Florida, sailing by 31 December 2026 |
Disney Adventure, Singapore | Up to 20%, or 50% off the third and fourth guests | Third-and-fourth-guest offer: book by 20 December 2026 |
Every discount applies to the voyage fare only, never to taxes, fees and port expenses, and none of them combine with each other or with a placeholder. Disney's Florida page is not consistent with itself: its browser title says up to 20% while the page says up to 30%. Go by the price on the sailing.
If you fail a residency check at the terminal, Disney re-prices the cruise and you pay the difference before you board. Our money-saving guide covers what counts as proof.
How does the Disney cruise placeholder work, and which dates are blocked out?
A placeholder is a future-cruise deposit you can only buy on board: $250 per stateroom for up to two staterooms, fully refundable until you pick a sailing, and valid for a cruise that starts within 24 months. As of September 2026 it takes 10% off most sailings, and 20% or 25% off a list of select sailings running to September 2027.
Since December 2025 it can also take 10% off concierge categories 02B and lower on select sailings. Disney's older placeholder terms page, still live, says concierge bookings get an onboard credit of $100 or $200 instead. Disney's offer page is the newer of the two, and two outlets describe the change the same way.
If a booking already made becomes eligible for a bigger discount, Disney applies it automatically and refunds any difference if you have paid in full.
"Blockout dates apply" is a placeholder rule. The guaranteed-stateroom, Florida and military pages we read list no blockout dates. Here are the placeholder blockouts, as Disney listed them on 24 September 2026:
Ship | Placeholder blockout sail dates | Extra blockouts for concierge |
|---|---|---|
Disney Destiny | 23 December 2026, 28 December 2026, 22 March 2027 | Everything to 2 January 2027, and 27 March 2027 |
Disney Dream | 23 November 2026, 22 March 2027 | None |
Disney Fantasy | 25 November 2026, 21 March 2027, 26 March 2027 | None |
Disney Wish | 23 November 2026 | 25 April to 10 September 2027 |
Disney Magic | None | 11 sail dates from April 2027 to March 2028 |
Disney Wonder | None | 10 May, 14 June, 26 July, 6 September and 13 September 2027 |
Disney Treasure | None | None |
Disney Adventure | None | None |
When do you pay gratuities, and when does onboard credit appear?
Gratuities can be prepaid online or left to be charged on board. Disney recommends $16 per guest per night, children and infants included, or $27.25 in concierge. Prepay under My Reservations, or through your travel agent; if you do not, Disney adds the amount to your onboard account, and Guest Services can change it once you sail.
A prepaid gratuity can only be refunded in full, to the card that paid it.
Disney's FAQ gives no prepayment deadline. A travel agency and a planDisney panelist both say it closes 3 days before sailing, and a TouringPlans regular in July 2026 said the option "shut off" a few days out. An 18% gratuity is added separately to bar, beverage, adult-dining, deck-service and spa bills.
Onboard credit from a Disney offer appears on your stateroom account automatically. Disney's military credit, for example, can be spent on drinks, shopping or Port Adventures, only on that sailing, and cannot be cashed or refunded. Credit from a travel agent is the agent's offer, not Disney's; our travel agent guide covers how it works.
Common questions
- Is the Disney cruise deposit refundable?
- For a standard stateroom, yes, if you cancel 90 days or more before a sailing of up to five nights, or 120 days or more before a longer one. Concierge and suite deposits are non-refundable from booking, and guaranteed-stateroom fares are paid in full and non-refundable.
- When is final payment due on a Disney concierge cruise?
- Since 24 September 2024, the same as other staterooms: 90 days before sailings of up to five nights and 120 days before longer ones. Before that, concierge paid at 120 and 150 days. Always check the balance-due date on your own reservation, which is what Disney's terms treat as binding.
- Can you add Disney's Vacation Protection Plan after booking?
- Usually, up to final payment. The deadline is final payment or the date any charge on the booking becomes non-refundable, whichever is earlier. Concierge deposits are non-refundable at once, so concierge guests must add the plan when they book.
- Does Disney's Cancel For Any Reason give you your money back?
- No. It gives a future cruise credit worth 75% of the cancellation fee, valid for one year, not transferable and with no cash value. You must cancel before the ship departs. A cash refund comes only from the insurance part of the plan, for a covered reason.
- Do Disney cruise discounts apply to taxes and port fees?
- No. Every current Disney offer, from the placeholder to Florida resident and military rates, discounts the voyage fare only. Taxes, fees and port expenses are charged in full, and Disney can pass on increases in them even after you have paid.
