Which rides are actually worth a Lightning Lane, from twelve years of queue data

How to read these numbers

Every figure below is the average posted wait and the average daily peak for that attraction across 2025 and 2026, from Queue-Times' per-park statistics, which run back to 2014.

Average is what a Lightning Lane typically saves you on one use. Peak is the worst it usually gets on a given day, which is what you are buying insurance against.

The gap between them is the most useful column and the one nobody prints. Kilimanjaro Safaris averages 31 minutes and peaks at 64 — a ride where when you go matters more than what you pay. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train averages 46 and peaks at 59, a narrow spread, meaning it is long all day and timing will not rescue you.

These are posted waits, not measured ones. Disney posts them, Queue-Times records them, and posted times are known to run longer than the real queue. Treat them as a consistent yardstick between rides rather than a promise about your afternoon.

Which Magic Kingdom rides are worth a Lightning Lane?

Magic Kingdom is the park where the pricing matches the queues most honestly: the two Single Pass rides genuinely are the two longest lines.

Take Peter Pan's Flight as your Tier 1 pick. At 38 minutes it is the longest Tier 1 queue and it is a slow-loading dark ride that never gets better.

Take Haunted Mansion and Winnie the Pooh in Tier 2, both at 26 minutes. Everything below Pirates is single digits to low teens, and a Multi Pass slot spent on Mad Tea Party at eight minutes is a slot wasted.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure is the timing play: 34 average against a 60 peak is the widest spread in the park after the Safaris. Ride it early and you may not need anything.

Which Hollywood Studios rides are worth a Lightning Lane?

Hollywood Studios is the park where the price and the queue disagree, and that is the single most useful thing on this page.

Slinky Dog Dash has a longer queue than Rise of the Resistance — 61 minutes against 50, and 80 at peak against 68. Slinky Dog is included with Multi Pass. Rise of the Resistance costs extra as a Single Pass.

That inverts the usual advice. If you are buying one thing at Hollywood Studios, the Multi Pass Tier 1 slot on Slinky Dog Dash is worth more minutes than the Single Pass on Rise of the Resistance, and it is the cheaper of the two.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at 48 minutes is the other strong Tier 1 pick and is usually easier to get than Slinky Dog.

In Tier 2, take Tower of Terror and Toy Story Mania — 30 and 28 minutes, with peaks over 50. Alien Swirling Saucers at 16 is the drop-off.

Which EPCOT rides are worth a Lightning Lane?

EPCOT has the narrowest gap between its paid ride and its free one, which makes the Single Pass the hardest to justify of the four parks.

Test Track at 59 minutes is five minutes short of Guardians at 64, and Test Track is included with Multi Pass while Guardians is a paid Single Pass. If you are only buying one thing at EPCOT, the Multi Pass Tier 1 on Test Track is close to the same saving for none of the extra money.

EPCOT's Tier 2 is the weakest on property. Everything except Mission: SPACE and Turtle Talk averages ten minutes. Those slots are close to worthless here, which is worth knowing before you pay for a park day's Multi Pass on the assumption you will use three.

Our own record now disagrees. Across 5 to 15 September 2026 Guardians averaged 85 minutes in our five-minute record against 66 for Test Track, a gap of 19, and its Single Pass was sold out by our afternoon check on 8 of those 11 days. Which Animal Kingdom rides are worth a Lightning Lane?

Animal Kingdom does not split Multi Pass into tiers, so you pick any three — which makes it the easiest park to get right and the easiest to waste.

Take Kilimanjaro Safaris, Kali River Rapids and Na'vi River Journey, in that order. That is three of the five, and the fourth — Expedition Everest at 18 minutes — is the one to leave.

Kilimanjaro Safaris has the widest spread anywhere on this page: 31 minutes average against a 64-minute peak. More than doubling at the worst part of the day means an early or late safari beats a pass, and a midday one without a pass is the worst version of it.

Avatar Flight of Passage is the clearest Single Pass buy at Walt Disney World — 56 average, 82 peak, and nothing else in the park is close.

What about the shows?

Seven of the 55 Lightning Lane experiences are scheduled shows, and they now sit in the tables above marked "— show" rather than being left out of them.

They are Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration and Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! at Hollywood Studios, and Feathered Friends in Flight!, Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! at Animal Kingdom.

None carries a wait figure, because a performance that runs to a timetable has no standby queue to post.

A Lightning Lane on a show does not skip a line. It reserves a seating window at a performance that was going to start when it started, so what it saves is arriving early. That is worth something on a hot afternoon and very little otherwise.

Star Tours and Mickey's PhilharMagic used to be listed here as shows, and that was wrong. Both load continuously and both post waits, which is why they now appear in the tables with figures: Star Tours averages 7 minutes and PhilharMagic 13.

Those numbers are the argument, and it is a stronger one than calling them shows — a seven-minute queue is not worth one of three Multi Pass choices whatever you call the attraction.

So is Lightning Lane worth buying at all?

Whether Lightning Lane is worth buying depends on the park and the day, and the numbers point at a narrower answer than either the marketing or the backlash suggests.

The case for it is Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, where the top four queues run 34 to 64 minutes and a Multi Pass covering three of them saves a genuine hour or more.

The case against it is EPCOT and Animal Kingdom, where beyond the top three the queues fall off a cliff — ten-minute Tier 2 rides at EPCOT, an 18-minute Expedition Everest — and you are paying a per-person, per-day price to save a quarter of an hour.

And the case nobody makes is the calendar. Every figure here is a multi-year average, and queues in September run at roughly half the level of February on the same index. The same Multi Pass buys you far less in a quiet month, because there is far less queue to skip.

Where these numbers come from, and what we do not know

Wait figures are the mean of Queue-Times' published average and average-maximum wait per attraction for 2025 and 2026, read on 9 September 2026. Queue-Times has recorded Walt Disney World since 2014 and its numbers are Disney's own posted waits, captured every few minutes.

Tier assignments — which rides are Single Pass, Tier 1 and Tier 2 — come from Disney's own Lightning Lane passes page, read on 20 September 2026. It lists 55 experiences across the four parks, and Disney changes them without much notice.

This page used to take its tiers from a blog's March 2026 list of 55 experiences, and that cost it twelve rides. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is in Magic Kingdom's top Multi Pass group on Disney's own page and was missing here entirely; so were Soarin' Across America, Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, Star Tours, Expedition Everest and seven more.

Our own per-park guides already named several of them, so the hub was contradicting the rest of the site as well as Disney.

Animal Kingdom has no tiers at all — Disney simply says "choose up to 3 of the following", so the Tier 1 and Tier 2 split that applies at the other three parks does not exist there. Any page that prints one for Animal Kingdom has invented it.

Seven of the 55 are shows rather than rides, and they carry no wait figure because a scheduled performance has no standby queue to post. They are marked "— show" above. A Lightning Lane at a show buys you a seating window, not saved minutes, which is a different purchase.

What we do not know, and will not pretend to: which specific dates justify a purchase. That needs a full year of our own five-minute record joined to what people paid, and we hold days rather than years of it. We publish what we have on each attraction page and say so there too.

What these numbers are not is a measure of how crowded a park feels. Disney reported attendance up 3% in the quarter to June 2026 while average waits fell. Shorter queues and more people are both happening.
