How to reserve rides at Disney World — booking Lightning Lane, step by step
The short answer
Reserve rides by buying Lightning Lane in the My Disney Experience app, from 7am Eastern: seven days before a Disney hotel stay, or three days before a visit for everyone else. Pick up to three Multi Pass rides, and add a Single Pass for a ride Multi Pass excludes. Free ride reservations ended with FastPass.
Can you reserve rides at Disney World for free?
No. Standby queues are free, but booking a ride time is paid. The free FastPass+ system gave way to the paid Genie+ in 2021, and on 24 July 2024 Disney renamed Genie+ as Lightning Lane Multi Pass and individual Lightning Lanes as Single Pass, according to Disney Parks Blog.
Disney's own page says the same: Multi Pass replaced Genie+ and Single Pass replaced the old à la carte entry.
When can you book Lightning Lane?
From 7am Eastern on your first day of eligibility, according to Disney:
- Staying at a Disney Resort hotel, or at the Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve or Shades of Green: 7 days before the first day of your stay, for the whole stay, up to 14 days.
- Everyone else with a date-based ticket: 3 days before the first day of the ticket, for every day on it.
- Other admission, such as an Annual Pass: 3 days before each park visit.
Prices show in the app up to 21 days ahead, and Disney says they can be higher at holidays. Passes are nonrefundable and nontransferable.
What are the three kinds of Lightning Lane?
Disney sells three, and you can hold one of each kind plus a second Single Pass on the same day:

Multi Pass also includes downloads of your ride photos and videos from the day you buy it, though not the PhotoPass photographers' pictures elsewhere in the park, according to Disney's attraction-photo page. Which rides take photos.
Which rides are in which group at each park?
At three parks, Multi Pass makes you choose: only one of your first three picks can come from the park's top group. Animal Kingdom has no groups. The ride Multi Pass leaves out is sold as a Single Pass.

Everything else with a Lightning Lane, from Haunted Mansion to Toy Story Mania! and the Hollywood Studios shows, sits in the second group, where you can take two or all three picks.
How do you book Lightning Lane, step by step?
1. Before booking day, link everyone's tickets in My Disney Experience. The person booking can only buy for people on their Family & Friends list; our linking guide walks through it.
2. At 7am Eastern on your first eligible day, buy in the app. For Multi Pass you choose up to three rides and an arrival window for each before paying.
At purchase they must be the same for the whole party. 3. After buying, you can change rides or windows for some of the party, subject to availability, according to Disney.
4. On the day, go to the ride's Lightning Lane entrance during your arrival window and tap in with a MagicBand, MagicMobile pass, Key to the World card or ticket card. 5.
After your first ride, or once its window has passed, book the next Multi Pass ride in the app, one at a time, until the park's regular closing time.
Which Multi Pass ride should you book first?
The one whose standby line is long in the middle of the day and does not shorten early. That is the window a Lightning Lane saves, and our own five-minute wait record measures it. In September 2026 the strongest top-group picks were Peter Pan's Flight at Magic Kingdom (45 minutes at midday), Test Track at EPCOT (69) and Slinky Dog Dash at Hollywood Studios (63).
Tiana's Bayou Adventure is a weaker pick than it looks, because it averaged 12 minutes in the first two hours.

Who should skip Lightning Lane?
Anyone doing Animal Kingdom, where Disney Tourist Blog calls it unnecessary and our record has Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids short early. Anyone willing to stay until closing: in our record most headline queues were far shorter in the last hour than at midday.
And anyone at Hollywood Studios should think twice before skipping it, because that is the park where getting there early helped least.

- Multi Pass, yes, if your ticket has the Park Hopper option: later picks can be in a different park. Single Pass and Premier Pass are tied to one ride or one park, according to Disney.
