How to plan a Disney World vacation — the steps in order, with the dates that matter

When should you start planning a Disney World trip?

As soon as you know roughly when you want to go, because the dates decide almost everything after them: price, weather, crowds and which events are on. The deadlines that follow all count back from check-in, so our trip timeline turns a check-in date into the exact day each one opens.

Step 1: How do you choose when to go?

Weather and crowds pull in different directions. Our best time to visit guide sets twelve years of our own weather record against crowd data. The short version: early December and late January are when good weather and low crowds overlap, and September is the emptiest month with the worst weather of any worth visiting.

If a party or festival matters, check the event pages before fixing dates, because a Halloween party night closes Magic Kingdom to day guests at 6pm.

Step 2: How much should you budget?

More than most first estimates. Our trip cost calculator prices a trip by resort, season, nights and tickets, and what Disney World costs breaks it down. Tickets are date-based: a seven-day ticket runs $581 to $907 before tax on MouseSavers' chart of 2026 prices.

If you are saving up, saving for Disney World splits the total by when Disney wants the money.

Step 3: Where should you stay?

On site if the perks are worth their price to you: Disney hotel guests get Early Theme Park Entry, 30 minutes before every park opens, free buses, boats, monorail and Skyliner, free theme park parking, and Lightning Lane seven days ahead rather than three.

Step 4: How do you book, and when do you pay?

As a package or as room and tickets separately, and the difference is the payment schedule. Disney's 2026 package terms ask for a $200 deposit at booking if you book 31 days or more ahead, with the rest due 30 days before arrival. Cancelling 2 to 29 days out costs $200 a package.

Tickets bought on their own, and room-only bookings, have no payment plan, according to Disney's planDisney panel. Date-based tickets no longer need a park reservation, on Disney's own page.

Step 5: What do you set up in the Disney app?

Your party. Link everyone's tickets and reservations to one My Disney Experience account through the Family & Friends list before any booking day, because the person booking dining or Lightning Lane can only book for people on it. Our linking guide walks through it.

Step 6: When do dining reservations open?

At 6am Eastern, 60 days before check-in. On Disney's own restaurant pages, guests at Disney hotels book their whole stay, up to ten nights, from that day; everyone else books each day 60 days before that day. Step 7: When can you book Lightning Lane?

At 7am Eastern: seven days before your stay if you are at a Disney hotel, three days before your visit for everyone else, according to Disney. Our booking guide covers the three passes and each park's tier groups, and which rides are worth Lightning Lane ranks them.

Step 8: How do you plan the park days?

Last, once the bookings are fixed. The one-day guides for Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom put each park in order from our own queue record, and the park-day tool shows which rides are shorter early and which in the last hour.
