What can toddlers do at Disney World?

The short answer

More than you might think: 28 of the 49 rides we cover at the four parks have no height requirement, and a child under three gets in free. The best-reviewed of them are Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway and Kilimanjaro Safaris. Disney's own list is narrower — it leaves 5 of those 28 off its preschool tag, including rides it marks as dark. Every ride and Disney's warnings for each are below.

What Disney leaves off its preschool list

Disney tags 83 attractions across the four parks as suitable for preschoolers. Of the rides above, it leaves out Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story Mania!, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure and Na'vi River Journey — every one of them open to a child of any height. It does not say why. What its own tags do show is that Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean are marked dark.

That is not a reason to skip them; it is a reason to know what is coming. If your toddler is unsettled by the dark or by sudden noise, start with the rides Disney tags for preschoolers and marks with nothing more than a spin: Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, Living with the Land, Jungle Cruise and Walt Disney World Railroad - Main Street, U.S.A..

The first rides with a height requirement

When your child is ready for more, these come first: Alien Swirling Saucers (32″), Tomorrowland Speedway (32″), The Barnstormer (35″), Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (38″), Kali River Rapids (38″), Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (38″), Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (38″), Slinky Dog Dash (38″). The height checker shows every ride a given height can board.

The rules that matter with a toddler

  • Under three is free. No ticket and no park reservation; the child’s age at the start of the trip decides, so a third birthday mid-trip does not change it. Disney states this through its planDisney answers rather than on its ticket pages.
  • Every park has a Baby Care Center with changing and nursing rooms, a feeding area and a kitchenette, and it sells diapers, formula, baby food and sunscreen. The water parks, hotels and Disney Springs do not have one.
  • Strollers: no wider than 31 inches or longer than 52, and no stroller wagons. Disney rents singles at $15 a day and doubles at $31, less by the day for a whole stay; rentals stay in the parks.
  • Rider Switch lets one adult wait with a child who cannot ride while the rest of the party rides, then swap without queueing again. At most two people from the waiting group ride on the switch. Disney offers it at 22 of the attractions we cover, mostly the ones with a height requirement.
