Celebrating a birthday at Disney World — the free button, the $45 cake, and what to expect

How do you get a birthday button at Disney World?

Ask for one. Birthday buttons are free at Guest Relations in the parks and at your Disney hotel's front desk, according to Disney Rewards, the Disney Visa's own site. Disney Tourist Blog adds City Hall at Magic Kingdom and some restaurants.

Disney also hands out "I'm Celebrating" and anniversary buttons for other occasions, as WDWInfo lists. Cast members who see the button tend to say happy birthday, which for many children is the point.

How do you order a birthday cake at Disney World?

Pre-order a Mickey Mouse celebration cake with a table-service reservation. On Disney's own cake page, as read on 13 September 2026:

• $45 a cake, plus tax and gratuity where it applies, added to the restaurant bill.
• It feeds four to six, in dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate.
• The chocolate ears can say "Happy Birthday" or "Congratulations", or nothing; there are no custom flavours or writing.
• It contains gluten, wheat, soy, milk and eggs, and is made where peanuts and tree nuts may be present.
• Once you pick the restaurant, you cannot move the cake to another one.

For a cake beyond the Mickey design, Disney Tourist Blog gives the cake line as 407-827-2253 and warns that custom cakes are expensive and need booking well ahead.

Will you get free things on your birthday at Disney World?

Sometimes, and you should not plan on it. Disney Tourist Blog's advice is to wear the button for the fun of it rather than for rewards: cast members have given celebrants surprise treats, but it says that generosity has fallen in recent years, which it puts down to people abusing it.

Signature restaurants do tend to mark an occasion; it cites Victoria & Albert's printing a personalised menu. Mention the birthday when you book.

What else can you book for a Disney World birthday?

Who should plan a birthday differently?

Anyone with a food allergy: the Mickey cake cannot be changed and contains the main allergens, so ask the restaurant about an alternative when you book.
